Netflix sparks frenzy as ‘Money Heist’ prepares mysterious comeback with new expansion

Álvaro Morte unveiled the surprise news at the ‘Berlin’ season two premiere as theories exploded online

Netflix has officially confirmed that the world of Money Heist is returning, and fans are already spiralling over what the streaming giant could have planned next for one of its biggest international franchises ever.

The announcement arrived on May 10 during the world premiere of Berlin season two in Seville, where Álvaro Morte, who famously played the Professor, revealed that the universe of Money Heist would continue expanding. Netflix also released a short teaser that immediately sent social media into detective mode.

Rather than confirming a straightforward sixth season, Netflix appeared to hint at something much larger. The teaser described Money Heist as a universe that has “never stopped growing, evolving, and surprising us,” before ending with the line that “the revolution NEVER ends.” That wording alone was enough to trigger thousands of reactions online from viewers convinced that multiple spin offs are now in development.

Many fans focused on the teaser’s final image showing hands uncovering a gold bar, with theories quickly emerging that the story could revisit the aftermath of the Bank of Spain robbery from the original series finale. Others speculated that familiar characters may return in standalone projects similar to Berlin, which already proved there was still huge audience demand for the franchise after the main series ended.

The timing of the announcement has also added to the excitement. Money Heist became one of Netflix’s defining global hits during the late 2010s and early 2020s, transforming Spanish language television into mainstream worldwide entertainment. Characters including the Professor, Tokyo, Berlin and Nairobi became cultural icons far beyond Spain, while the show’s red jumpsuits and Salvador Dalí masks became instantly recognisable at protests, conventions and Halloween events across the world.

Fans online praised Netflix for revisiting the franchise instead of attempting a full reboot with an entirely new cast. Many viewers argued that expanding the universe through side stories allows the series to stay fresh while preserving the emotional ending of the original run.

Reports have also fuelled speculation that another character centred project may already be underway. Spanish outlet El País recently reported that Alex Pina’s production company Vancouver is filming a four episode miniseries focused on Colonel Tamayo, the ruthless police figure played by Fernando Cayo.

The return announcement arrives just days before Berlin season two premieres on Netflix on May 15, giving the platform another opportunity to reignite global interest in the franchise. While Netflix has not confirmed exact details about future projects, the company has made it clear that the world of Money Heist is far from over.

For longtime viewers, that single message was enough. The gang may have completed its biggest robbery, but fans already believe another plan is being assembled.
