The series finale of The Comeback concluded Valerie Cherish’s long-running television journey with a satirical look at artificial intelligence, Hollywood insecurity and the entertainment industry’s shifting priorities.
The finale opens with Valerie celebrating the success of her AI-assisted sitcom How’s That?!, which is renewed for a second season by streaming platform NuNet. However, the renewal quickly becomes overshadowed by concerns about AI replacing television writers.
Network executive Jack Stevens pressures Valerie to publicly criticise AI during a press event, describing the technology as “an extinction event” for writers. Valerie hesitates to take a firm position, insisting audiences may not care what actors think about the issue.
The episode also follows Evan, who becomes disillusioned with writing because of AI’s growing influence in television production. Despite his frustrations, he eventually steps in to improve a failing scene during a taping, reminding Valerie of the importance of human creativity.
During a press conference, NuNet executive Brandon Wallick defends AI-generated television and argues audiences have already accepted the format. “He’s not looking to make a great show. He’s looking for something ‘good enough,’ something people can leave on when they’re doing... whatever,” Valerie later realises after confronting Brandon about the future of the programme.
Tensions rise further when Valerie discovers NuNet intends to continue using an AI-generated version of her likeness after digitally scanning her body. Brandon informs her she is not essential to the show’s future, prompting Valerie to reconsider her career direction.
The finale ends on a more optimistic note after Valerie receives an offer to star in a new drama series titled Judge’s Table, where she plays a federal judge turned chef.
In the final documentary interview, Valerie reflects on her career and personal resilience before leaving viewers with one final joke and callback to the show’s earlier seasons.
