Martin Short is speaking candidly about the devastating loss of his daughter, Katherine Short, describing her death as a “nightmare” for his family.

In an emotional interview tied to his upcoming Marty, Life Is Short documentary, Short reflected on the grief his family has endured since Katherine died in February at the age of 42. “It’s a nightmare,” he said, adding that while the pain is profound, the family understands that mental illness can overwhelm even the most loved and supported individuals.

Katherine was a licensed clinical social worker who worked in mental health and community outreach. Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, adopted Katherine along with their sons Oliver and Henry.

Short has faced multiple personal tragedies throughout his life. His eldest brother died in a car accident when he was 12, and both of his parents died before he turned 21. He later lost Dolman to ovarian cancer in 2010 after nearly 30 years of marriage.

Despite these losses, the comedian said he and his family are focusing on supporting one another and honoring Katherine’s memory. The actor recently made his first public appearance since her death at a Los Angeles screening of Marty, Life Is Short, where he was joined by his sons and close friends.

The Netflix documentary offers an intimate look at Short’s celebrated career as well as the personal hardships that have shaped his life. It premieres on Netflix on May 12.

Short’s comments have resonated with fans, who have expressed sympathy and admiration for his openness during such a painful chapter in his life.
