Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever has revisited the relationship between Kelly Matthews and convicted murderer Wade Steven Wilson, detailing allegations of abuse that surfaced months before he killed two women in Florida in 2019.
Season two, episode one of the Netflix series focuses on Matthews, who dated Wilson for around five months after meeting him on a dating app in late 2018.
According to the programme, Wilson introduced himself using his middle name, Steven, before later moving into Matthews’ apartment in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Matthews said in the documentary that she initially believed the relationship would become long-term.
However, she later discovered Wilson had been secretly seeing other women while also engaging in criminal activity, including allegedly pawning her laptop and stealing puppies from a breeder.
The documentary states that tensions escalated in February 2019 when Matthews accused Wilson of physically and sexually assaulting her after she refused to drive him to a rehabilitation facility.
Matthews alleged that Wilson strangled, punched and tied her up before forcing her to travel with him.
“When he choked me, it felt like he was going to kill me,” Matthews said in an audio recording featured in the documentary. “He kept threatening to stab me 30 times and throw me in a ditch.”
Police later interviewed Wilson, who denied the allegations. According to the programme, the case was closed after investigators concluded there was insufficient evidence to proceed.
Months later, Wilson murdered Kristine Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43, on the same day in October 2019. Reflecting on the killings in Worst Ex Ever, Matthews said, “Deep down, I wasn't shocked at all. I knew that that's what he was capable of.”
The documentary also reveals that Matthews later filed a complaint against the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department over the handling of her case. An internal review reportedly found the investigation had not been fully completed.
