Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday held a telephone conversation with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, during which the two leaders exchanged views on the evolving regional situation and reaffirmed support for peace efforts in the region.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the two leaders reviewed the progress of ongoing peace efforts and underscored the importance of constructive engagement by all parties to ensure their success.

“The prime minister expressed Pakistan’s sincere appreciation for Qatar’s continued and steadfast support for Pakistan’s peace initiatives, reaffirming the depth of the brotherly bonds between the two countries,” the statement said.

The statement added that PM Shehbaz conveyed his warm regards to Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and said he was looking forward to the Emir’s upcoming visit to Pakistan.

According to the PMO, the prime minister said the visit would help further strengthen and expand the enduring partnership between Pakistan and Qatar.

Later, PM Shehbaz, in a post on X, shared details of his telephone conversation with his Qatari counterpart and said the Qatari premier “reaffirmed our shared commitment to support all ongoing efforts aimed at promoting lasting peace, stability and constructive dialogue across the region.”

Separately, the Qatari premier took to X, saying that he and PM Shehbaz "reviewed the relations of cooperation between the two countries and ways to support and enhance them."

He added that the two also "discussed the latest developments in the situation in the region, as well as Pakistan's mediation efforts aimed at de-escalation."

According to the post, the Qatari premier expressed his country's appreciation for Pakistan's efforts, "and all parties that have undertaken mediation and commendable endeavours that contributed to reaching a ceasefire between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran"

Reaffirming Qatar's "full support for Pakistan's mediation efforts aimed at ending the crisis through peaceful means," Al Thani emphasised, "the necessity for all parties to respond to these efforts in a way that contributes to creating the appropriate conditions for progress in the negotiations."

He further added that this could help lead to an agreement that achieved sustainable peace in the region.

Last week, PM Shehbaz and Al Thani had spoken over the phone, holding a "productive exchange of views" on the current regional situation. In the previous phone call, both premiers had reaffirmed their commitment to facilitate the ongoing peace efforts in the region.

The calls came in the wake of the ongoing United States and Israeli war on Iran, with a potential new round of negotiations hanging in the balance.

The US and Israel preemptively attacked Iran on February 28 and assassinated the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran hit Israel with drones and missiles and also targeted US bases across the Gulf region.

Later, Iran took control of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow sea route and important transit way for oil, gas and cargo export and import in the region.

Pakistan played an important role in peacebuilding and the ceasefire between Iran and the US.
