The makers of the new Harry Potter spin-off series have reportedly begun microchipping props in an effort to stop cast and crew members from stealing items from the set, especially valuable broomsticks.

According to reports, warning notices have been placed around the Warner Bros. Studios set in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, informing staff that props are being monitored daily for security and inventory purposes. The signs also state that anyone needing to remove a prop from the set must first get approval from the props department.

The production company also put up signs which state: “For inventory and security purposes, props are being tracked daily and movement of props will be logged”.

They added: “If you need to take any prop off set or away from this designated area, please seek approval from the props department first".

The tighter security measures come after several items allegedly disappeared during production, including wands, spell books, fake food, and even pumpkins used in Hogwarts Great Hall scenes.

Production staff are said to be investigating missing items and checking online marketplaces such as eBay in case props are being sold there.

Crew members have reportedly been warned that stealing props could lead to dismissal and breach-of-contract consequences on the £1 billion production.

A source told The Sun that no one knows who is responsible for the missing items, despite suspicions falling on background actors and crew members.

Meanwhile, Tom Felton, who famously played Draco Malfoy in the original Harry Potter films, previously joked about taking souvenirs from the set while advising Lox Pratt, the actor stepping into the role for the HBO spin-off series.

“Have as much fun as possible, take as many pictures as you can, steal as many props as you can – they’ll be worth a fortune. But also, if you do need a word of encouragement or questions to ask, I’m there,” Felton told the Happy Sad Confused Podcast.

Many joked about whether the new cast members took his advice too seriously.

Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry Potter in the original films, also experienced losing a famous prop during filming. His Firebolt broomstick reportedly fell during the shooting of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2007) while filming a flying motorbike scene with Sirius Black.

The upcoming Harry Potter series is expected to premiere on HBO Max and will star Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
