Melissa Barrera has addressed her Scream 7 exit and the backlash over her Gaza posts in a new interview with Variety.

The actress was dropped from the horror franchise in late 2023 after publicly criticising the Israeli government’s military actions and sharing posts advocating for Palestinian civilians. Production company Spyglass Media Group said at the time it had “zero tolerance” for antisemitism or hate speech, a claim Barrera strongly rejected.

In her latest comments, Barrera said the aftermath left her professionally isolated, with job opportunities drying up for months. She described the experience as a turning point, forcing her to reconsider her identity beyond acting while navigating industry backlash.

Despite the setback, Barrera has continued working and is currently starring in the Broadway production Titaníque. She said the theatre space has offered a sense of creative fulfilment and stability following a turbulent period in Hollywood.

Barrera also suggested that speaking out came with consequences not equally faced across the industry, noting that some public figures have been able to express similar views without professional repercussions.

Now, the actress is focused on rebuilding her career, including launching her own production company and developing new projects. While the controversy surrounding Scream 7 remains a defining moment, Barrera says she is moving forward with renewed determination and a broader perspective on her future in entertainment.
