Valorant pro sym’s birthday trip ends in tragedy

Tyler Porter, the former professional Valorant player known as “sym,” has died at the age of 21 following a car accident.
The news was shared on May 5 by one of Porter’s friends, who said Porter and another friend, Austen Reed, were killed in a vehicle crash during a trip marking Porter’s 21st birthday.
Porter was best known for his time with TSM, where he first played on the organization’s academy roster before moving up to the main team in 2024. During his time there, he became one of the notable young names to emerge from North America’s tier-two Valorant scene.
Following news of his death, TSM paid tribute to Porter on social media, remembering his impact on the team’s Valorant program and offering condolences to both Porter and Reed.
Several figures from across the competitive Valorant community also shared messages in his memory.
Sean Bezerra of 100 Thieves recalled their early years trying to break into professional play together. He shared memories of late-night practice sessions, scrims, and the friendship they built while both were trying to establish themselves in the scene.
Leo Faria, global head of Valorant esports at Riot Games, also offered condolences, calling the tragedy a reminder of how fragile life can be.
Porter had stepped away from full-time professional play but returned at the start of 2026 as a stand-in for Winthrop University.
Reed, who competed under the name “yuno,” was also involved in the competitive Valorant scene.
Porter’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief across the esports community, with players, organizations, and fans remembering him as one of the promising young talents to come through North American Valorant.
