Tremors felt in Islamabad after 5.2-magnitude quake near Tajikistan border: PMD

No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been confirmed

Tremors were felt in Islamabad and surrounding areas on Monday after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near the Tajikistan–Xinjiang border region, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD said the earthquake was recorded at 10:56 am, at a depth of 128 kilometres. Its epicentre was located in the Tajikistan–Xinjiang border region at latitude 38.65°N and longitude 73.64°E.

Tremors were reported in Islamabad and nearby areas, prompting concern among residents, although no immediate reports of damage or casualties were confirmed.

In a separate development, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake also shook parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), the PMD said.

The tremor was recorded at 11:29 am at a depth of 25 kilometres, with its epicentre located 12 kilometres south-east of Muzaffarabad, at latitude 34.28°N and longitude 73.55°E.

On April 27, tremors were felt in parts of Islamabad and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Monday after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border region.

On April 3, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan. Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Chitral, Peshawar, Swat, Shangla and other areas.

Last month, a moderate earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale jolted Balochistan's Khuzdar district and surrounding areas, though no casualties or damage were reported.

In February, an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan, with tremors felt in Islamabad, Swat, Peshawar, Chitral, and other cities across Pakistan.
