Korean Festival leaves K-pop fans disappointed

Korean Embassy event gets cancelled over unanticipated large turnout, overcrowding

ISLAMABAD:

The 2026 K-Wave Festa organised by the Korean Embassy in Islamabad was cut short due to overcrowding and bad weather, with many young visitors, students and families having to leave from outside the entrance.

The Korean Embassy organises a festival representing Korean culture every year to promote Korean cuisine, arts and music in Islamabad. The festival is known for its K-beauty masterclasses and K-pop performances, which are highly anticipated by fans of South Korean pop culture in the twin cities.

This year, the Embassy built up further anticipation through social media marketing by getting influencers to promote the festival to their followers. The festival, held at a private hotel in Islamabad, had already been postponed once due to the US-Iran peace talks, and people were eagerly awaiting its return.

However, unable to anticipate the level of enthusiasm, the organisers had only made arrangements for a limited number of people. When groups of young men and women as well as families, numbering in the thousands, turned up the festival soon became overcrowded. The organisers were forced to shut down the event prematurely. Responding to the crowd and traffic lining up the roads leading to the sensitive Red Zone area, the Islamabad administration stepped in and closed all the roads leading to the private hotel, which disrupted the traffic system.

Citizens took to social media to express their disappointment as many were forced to wait in line and in the parking lot in the afternoon heat only to be denied entry. "I promoted the Korean Embassy's event for free. People came from far just to attend the event only for it to be cancelled." said a young influencer with 7,000 followers on Instagram. Hundreds of others echoed the sentiment.

Talking to The Express Tribune, a spokesperson for the Korean Embassy said that the love of the people for the Korean Festival cannot be described in words and that the festival will be organised in a better way in the future.
