'Begum Jaan' highlights loneliness, lost fame on Karachi stage

Story centres on performer once celebrated for her beauty, talent

KARACHI:

A theatre production titled "Begum Jaan" has been staged in Karachi as part of the Alumni Series organised by the Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi's School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Written by noted playwright Javed Siddiqui and directed by Alizeh Javed, the play features a cast including Alizeh Javed, Daniyal Naeem and Farzeen Ejaz.

The story centres on Begum Jaan, an ageing courtesan and performer who was once celebrated for her beauty and artistic talent among the elite. As time passes, however, the admiration she once commanded begins to fade, and she finds herself increasingly ignored by the very circles that once embraced her.

Through its narrative, the play explores themes of loneliness, the fleeting nature of fame, and the search for dignity in later life.

Key characters include Begum Jaan, portrayed as a once-renowned but now elderly singer; Zarina, her granddaughter; and Sanjay Pandey, an ambitious journalist. The journalist's quest to establish his identity leads him to investigate a series of letters allegedly written to Begum Jaan by prominent historical figures, including Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

The production reflects a growing interest in theatre at the Arts Council, with organisers aiming to provide a platform for emerging and established performers through such alumni-led initiatives.
