'The Boys' creator Eric Kripke says Donald Trump's Jesus post upstaged Homelander's 'God' story line
'It’s just really hard to out-satire this world,' Kripke said of Homelander's 'God arc'

Eric Kripke has revealed that real-world events unexpectedly undercut one of the boldest storylines in The Boys, admitting it’s becoming increasingly difficult for satire to keep pace with reality.
Speaking about the latest arc involving Homelander, Kripke said the creative team initially worried that portraying the character as seeing himself as a god might be “too far” for audiences. The storyline was designed to push the limits of the show’s dark, political satire.
However, those concerns quickly shifted when real-world events appeared to mirror the show’s themes. Kripke pointed to the timing of a controversial post by Donald Trump, which depicted himself in a god-like manner, saying it arrived just as the show was preparing to explore similar imagery with Homelander.
According to Kripke, the overlap dulled the intended impact of the storyline. What was meant to feel shocking and exaggerated suddenly felt less like satire and more like a reflection of reality.
“A month ago when we were talking about marketing, I was like, Homelander saying he’s God is so out there,” Kripke explained. “We have to be careful about how we even introduce the idea to the public because they’ll say he’s gone too far, and here we are. It’s just really hard to out-satire this world.”
The moment highlights a growing challenge for shows like The Boys, which has built its reputation on pushing boundaries and reflecting real-world politics through a heightened, fictional lens. As headlines become increasingly extreme, creators are finding it harder to stay ahead of the curve.
Kripke’s comments underline a broader shift in entertainment, where satire is no longer just about exaggeration but about keeping up with reality itself, a reality that, at times, appears just as surreal as fiction.
