Resident Evil film teaser released as Zach Cregger outlines inspiration

Zach Cregger shares inspiration for Resident Evil film as teaser reveals first look ahead of September release

A new teaser trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil film has been released, with director and writer Zach Cregger outlining his approach to adapting the franchise into an original cinematic story.

Speaking in a Q&A, Cregger reflected on his early experiences with the series, citing Resident Evil 2 as a formative influence.

He described the survival horror mechanics, including resource management and deliberate pacing, as central to the experience he aims to bring to the film.

Cregger also highlighted a memorable moment from Resident Evil Village, particularly a sequence involving a pursuit in a confined environment. He said the scene was “honestly terrifying” and recalled stepping away from the game due to its intensity.

The film is set within the broader Resident Evil universe but does not retell the storyline of existing games.

Instead, Cregger explained that the narrative follows a new character navigating a crisis in Raccoon City, drawing on the structure of the games.

He noted that the story focuses on a journey from one point to another, with escalating challenges and changing environments.

Cregger stated that adapting an original storyline allowed him to avoid direct comparisons with established characters, saying he preferred to “celebrate everything I love about the games” while telling a separate story.

The film incorporates familiar elements such as weapon progression and limited resources, reflecting gameplay mechanics.

Actor Austin Abrams plays the lead character, described by Cregger as an ordinary individual reacting to extraordinary circumstances.

The film also includes references and visual details intended for fans of the series, including elements inspired by Resident Evil 4.

Cregger acknowledged the expectations of fans, noting that some may prefer direct adaptations of the games’ narratives.

The Resident Evil film is scheduled for release in cinemas on September 18.
