Britney Spears has been formally charged with driving under the influence following her arrest in Ventura County, California.
Prosecutors announced that Spears faces one misdemeanor DUI charge after being taken into custody on March 4. Authorities reportedly observed her driving erratically before the arrest, and later claimed an unidentified substance was found in her vehicle. She is also believed to have been under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Spears is scheduled to be arraigned on May 4, although attendance is not required due to the charge being a misdemeanor. Prosecutors may consider a “wet reckless” plea agreement, typically offered in cases involving no prior DUI history, no injuries, and a low blood alcohol level.
The legal development comes shortly after Spears voluntarily checked into a treatment facility on April 12 for substance abuse support. Sources close to the singer said the decision was made independently and was focused on her mental health and recovery.
Spears, 44, has since been spending time with her family, including her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, following the incident. Reports suggest her support system has been encouraging her recovery process.
Legal experts note that while rehab is an important step, continued treatment and structured aftercare are essential for long-term recovery outcomes. The case remains ongoing as Spears prepares for her upcoming court date.
