Past remarks from Call of Duty film director Peter Berg have resurfaced following renewed attention on the upcoming adaptation of the popular video game franchise.

Berg, who is set to direct the film scheduled for release in June 2028, previously criticised video games in a 2013 interview.

The project, first announced in 2025, will be written by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, with Berg attached as director.

However, after the production details were confirmed earlier this month, online discussions highlighted comments Berg made more than a decade ago while promoting his film Lone Survivor.

During the interview, Berg was asked about his views on war-themed video games, including the Call of Duty series.

His response was direct, “Pathetic. Pathetic. Keyboard courage. Can’t stand it. The only people that I give a Call of Duty get-out-of-jail-free card to is the military.” He added, “They’re out there serving and they’re bored and they want to entertain themselves? Okay, maybe. Kids? Uh-uh.”

When asked whether members of the military played such games, Berg responded, “Some of them do. But I tell them I think it’s pathetic. I think anyone that sits around playing video games for four hours… It’s weak. Get out, do something.”

The comments have circulated online as anticipation builds for the film adaptation. The interview predates Berg’s involvement with the Call of Duty project by more than a decade, and no updated remarks on his views have been included alongside the resurfaced statements.

Details about the film’s storyline remain limited. It is not yet confirmed whether the adaptation will follow existing campaigns from the franchise or introduce an original narrative.

The Call of Duty film is currently scheduled for release on June 2028.
