Power supply improves during peak hours

The Power Division on Wednesday said electricity generation and supply conditions remained relatively stable during peak hours on April 28, supported by improved hydel output and local gas availability.

According to a spokesperson, total hydel generation during peak time stood at 6,000 megawatts (MW), against the country's installed hydel capacity of 11,500MW.

The spokesperson added that electricity production also improved due to the supply of additional local gas to certain power plants. The increase in hydel generation and local gas availability helped stabilise the national grid, particularly through improved transmission from the southern region.

This stability enabled the system to bring an additional 100MW into the central grid, while overall 500MW were transmitted from the south. Despite the improved situation, DISCOs carried out load management ranging from 25 minutes to one hour during peak night hours.

However, after 8 pm, electricity demand dropped due to weather conditions, and no load management was required.
