Pixar may not be done with the Toy Story universe just yet. According to recent comments highlighted in a Gizmodo report, the studio still has additional ideas beyond Toy Story 5, suggesting the beloved franchise could continue in new ways.

While Toy Story 5 is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026, Pixar creatives have indicated that the story world still has room to grow. The franchise has long been built around evolving themes of childhood, and the next installment continues that trend by exploring how toys compete with modern technology for kids’ attention.

The upcoming film will once again follow Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie as they face a new kind of challenge, screen time. A tablet-like device called “Lilypad” acts as a central antagonist, symbolizing how digital entertainment is reshaping playtime and childhood itself.

Director Andrew Stanton has emphasized that this installment tackles a real-world issue: fewer children are engaging with traditional toys, raising questions about what role they still play in modern life.

Despite Toy Story 4 previously being framed as a potential ending, the continued development of Toy Story 5, and now hints at further ideas, shows Pixar’s willingness to revisit the franchise as long as there are meaningful stories to tell. Reports suggest that concepts for expanding the series have existed for years, even as far back as the late 2000s.

At the same time, Pixar has acknowledged the need to balance sequels with original storytelling. While franchises like Toy Story remain hugely popular, creators have stressed that new ideas are equally important for the studio’s future.

For now, Toy Story 5 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated animated releases of 2026, blending nostalgia with contemporary themes. But if Pixar follows through on its additional ideas, Woody and Buzz’s journey may be far from over.
