Nathan Chasing Horse, known for his role in Dances With Wolves, has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted on multiple charges relating to sexual assault. The sentencing, delivered on April 28, 2026 in Nevada, follows a lengthy legal process that drew widespread attention due to the severity of the allegations and the actor’s former public profile.

A jury had previously found Chasing Horse guilty on 13 charges, largely connected to the abuse of Indigenous women and girls. During sentencing, the court heard emotional statements from victims and their families, many of whom described the long lasting impact of the abuse on their lives, relationships and sense of identity. Several spoke about the deep personal and spiritual harm caused, with one victim detailing how her childhood and formative years were irreparably altered.

The prosecution argued that Chasing Horse exploited his position as a spiritual figure within Indigenous communities to gain trust and manipulate victims. According to evidence presented in court, he allegedly used his role to create a false sense of authority, convincing victims that compliance was tied to spiritual consequences. Prosecutors described this as a sustained pattern of abuse that extended over many years.

Judge Jessica Peterson, who presided over the case, addressed the gravity of the crimes during sentencing, stating that the defendant had preyed on vulnerable individuals and abused positions of trust for personal gain. She also noted his continued denial of wrongdoing despite the outcome of the trial and the evidence presented.

Chasing Horse, 49, remained largely silent throughout the proceedings and maintained that the conviction represented a miscarriage of justice. Under the sentence, he will be eligible for parole after serving 37 years. As he was escorted from the courtroom, reports indicated that several individuals present reacted with visible emotion, reflecting the weight of the verdict.

The case has also extended beyond the United States. Authorities in Canada have previously filed separate charges against Chasing Horse, with legal proceedings there still pending. Law enforcement agencies across jurisdictions have indicated that they will continue to coordinate as further legal steps unfold.

During the trial, prosecutors outlined how the accused allegedly constructed a network of influence tied to ceremonial practices and healing rituals. Victims testified that they initially sought guidance or support, only to be subjected to coercion and abuse. Defence attorneys challenged aspects of the testimony during proceedings, though the jury ultimately delivered guilty verdicts on the majority of counts.

The outcome has been seen by many as a significant moment for accountability, particularly within communities where the abuse of authority can remain underreported. Victims who spoke publicly expressed hope that the verdict would encourage others to come forward, even as they continue to deal with the lasting effects of the trauma.
