The Harry Potter television series is set to recast the role of Ginny Weasley ahead of its second season after actress Gracie Cochrane confirmed she will not return to the HBO production, according to Deadline.

Cochrane, who portrayed Ginny Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, has stepped away from the role following what her family described as “unforeseen circumstances.” In a statement, they said the decision was difficult but expressed gratitude for her time on the series.

“Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team for creating such an unforgettable experience,” the statement said. Cochrane also added that she is excited about future opportunities.

HBO confirmed her departure and said it respects the decision made by the actress and her family, thanking her for her contribution to the first season.

“We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season of HBO’s Harry Potter series, and we are grateful for her work on season one of the show,” HBO said in a statement.

The recasting comes as production on season two is expected to begin in the fall, following the show’s recent renewal. Season one is currently wrapping production.

The series is an adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s globally successful book franchise and features a young ensemble cast selected from tens of thousands of auditions. Ginny Weasley remains an important character in the story, with her role expected to expand in future seasons.

Production on season two is expected to continue as planned following the recasting decision.
