A 21-year-old Austrian man has pleaded guilty to involvement in a planned terrorist attack targeting a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, in a case that shocked fans and led to the cancellation of multiple shows.

The suspect, identified as Beran A, admitted in court to charges linked to terrorism during proceedings in Wiener Neustadt. Authorities said the plot was aimed at Swift’s scheduled 2024 performances at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, which were expected to draw tens of thousands of fans.

Prosecutors revealed that the suspect had been arrested on August 7, 2024, just one day before the concerts, after intelligence tipped off authorities about the planned attack. The threat prompted organisers to cancel all three sold-out shows, disappointing fans worldwide but preventing potential harm.

Investigators alleged that the suspect had attempted to acquire weapons and materials to carry out the attack. Reports also indicated he had researched explosives and explored ways to target large crowds at the venue.

The case extends beyond the concert plot. Prosecutors said the suspect, along with an alleged accomplice, had discussed carrying out additional attacks in cities including Istanbul, Dubai, and Mecca, though those plans were not fully realised.

The trial is ongoing, and the suspect could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The incident remains one of the most serious security threats linked to a major music event in recent years, highlighting the scale of the danger that was ultimately prevented.
