Pakistan aims to strengthen IP framework
The Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO) director general has reaffirmed that Pakistan remains committed to strengthening its IP framework to support innovation in sports and beyond.
"We must encourage our youth, entrepreneurs and manufacturers to protect their ideas, build strong brands and compete confidently in global markets," said the DG in his message on the World Intellectual Property Day 2026.
"I extend my greetings to all stakeholders – innovators, creators, entrepreneurs and especially our vibrant sports community across Pakistan.
"This year's theme, "IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate!", is both timely and inspiring. It reminds us that the world of sports is not only about athletic excellence, but also about creativity, technology, branding and innovation, all of which are protected and promoted through intellectual property," he said.
Pakistan has a proud sporting legacy. From cricket fields to hockey turfs, from squash courts to global arenas, the country's athletes have consistently demonstrated talent, resilience and excellence. Behind these achievements lies a growing ecosystem of innovation – sports technologies, performance analytics, merchandise branding, and media rights, all driven by intellectual property.
Equally significant is Pakistan's globally recognised sports manufacturing industry. "Our city of Sialkot stands as a symbol of craftsmanship and innovation, producing world-class footballs that have been used in international tournaments, including FIFA World Cups. This success story is not only about skilled hands, but also about design rights, trademarks and quality assurance – key pillars of the IP system," the DG said.
