Sindh pushes modern landfill, waste reform
Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has directed authorities to expedite the completion of the engineered sanitary landfill site at Jam Chakro, emphasising the need to modernise waste management systems in the province.
During a meeting with a Chinese delegation, detailed discussions were held on improving sanitation, waste management, and municipal services across the city. Officials from the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) and Project SSWEEP also attended the meeting. The minister stated that upon completion, the modern landfill site is expected to generate approximately $20 million in carbon credits. He further instructed that laser reader devices be installed at the landfill site to ensure proper waste classification, data organisation, and transparency.
Nasir Shah stressed the importance of introducing modern machinery and technology to enhance Karachi's solid waste management system. He also urged the Chinese delegation to prioritise solutions for the growing issues of garbage accumulation, drain cleaning, and waste collection in the city.
