Hollywood petition against Paramount Warner Bros merger tops 4,000 signatures

Opposition to the proposed $111 billion Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery merger continues to grow, with a Hollywood-backed petition now surpassing 4,000 signatures.

The open letter, which has gained support from prominent figures including Robert De Niro, Sofia Coppola and Holly Hunter, raises concerns about the potential impact of the deal on the entertainment industry.

According to Variety, the petition has attracted more than 4,194 signatories since its launch on April 13, including over 75 Oscar winners and nominees. Organisers argue that the merger would further consolidate the media landscape, leading to reduced competition, fewer job opportunities and higher costs for consumers.

The letter highlights concerns that the deal could limit creative opportunities and reduce the number of major US film studios, potentially reshaping the industry in favour of large conglomerates. It also warns of fewer television shows and films being produced if the merger proceeds.

The coalition behind the campaign includes organisations such as the Writers Guild of America and other industry advocacy groups. In addition to the petition, protests have been organised in New York and Washington, DC, aiming to draw attention to the potential consequences of the merger.

Despite growing opposition, Warner Bros Discovery shareholders have already approved the deal, though it remains subject to regulatory review in the United States and Europe. Lawmakers have also voiced concerns, signalling possible legal challenges that could delay or block the transaction.

If completed, the merger would combine major assets under a single entity, marking a significant shift in the global media and entertainment industry.
