Another Odyssey film in development as Epic musical adaptation follows Christopher Nolan project
A new film based on The Odyssey is in development, as an animated adaptation of the viral musical Epic moves forward alongside Christopher Nolan’s upcoming live-action project.
The new adaptation is being developed by producer Jerry Bruckheimer in collaboration with creator Jorge Rivera-Herrans. Epic, which originated as a musical inspired by Homer’s ancient epic, has gained a significant following online.
Rivera-Herrans first launched the project as a university thesis at the University of Notre Dame before expanding it during the pandemic by sharing its development on social media. The musical was later released in instalments, achieving commercial success on digital platforms.
The adaptation will also involve Atlantic Music Group president Kevin Weaver and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer Films as producers. The project is expected to be pitched to studios and streaming platforms, although it remains in early development.
The original Epic musical has seen widespread engagement from audiences, including participation in casting processes and the creation of fan content across social platforms. The project has generated billions of streams and views, reflecting its reach among younger audiences.
The story follows the journey of Odysseus, reinterpreted through elements influenced by anime, video games and contemporary musical theatre. This approach has been credited with helping the project connect with a new generation of viewers.
Rivera-Herrans has remained closely involved in the project’s development and previously declined multiple offers before partnering with Atlantic Music Group to expand its reach.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s live-action adaptation of The Odyssey is scheduled for release on July 17. The parallel development of multiple projects based on the same source material highlights renewed interest in the ancient Greek epic.
