The director of The Devil Wears Prada 2 has explained why Adrian Grenier’s character Nate does not appear in the upcoming sequel, following the actor’s public comments about his absence.

Director David Frankel confirmed that there were initial plans to include Grenier in a cameo role, but production timing ultimately prevented it.

Speaking about the decision, Frankel said, “I had an idea about sneaking him into a cameo, and, in the end, it was just too late in our production schedule to make it happen.”

He declined to share further details about the concept, adding that he appreciated Grenier’s response to the situation, including a recent advertisement that referenced his character.

Grenier, who portrayed Nate in the 2006 film, previously stated that he was “disappointed” not to have been asked to return.

He also acknowledged that audience reactions to the character over time may have influenced the decision, noting that the role has been viewed critically by some viewers due to Nate’s lack of support for Andy’s career.

The sequel, set for release on May 1, will reunite key cast members from the original film, including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

The absence of Nate reflects a shift in focus towards the returning core characters, whose storylines continue to evolve in the new instalment.

Grenier also addressed the situation in a recent commercial, where he said, “Let’s leave Nate back in 2006 and keep this good energy going.” His comments suggest a level of acceptance, even as he expressed earlier disappointment.

Additional reports indicate that a cameo involving Sydney Sweeney was also removed due to creative decisions during post-production.
