Universal Pictures has officially confirmed Miami Vice ’85 as the title of its upcoming reboot, starring Michael B Jordan and Austin Butler.
The film is scheduled to release on August 6, 2027, with production set to begin later this year, as reported by Variety.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick, the project will be filmed for IMAX and aims to reintroduce the iconic crime story to a new generation. The film revisits the world of undercover detectives in Miami, focusing on the glamour and corruption of the mid-1980s.
Michael B Jordan will take on the role of Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Austin Butler is set to portray James “Sonny” Crockett. The characters were originally played by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the classic 1980s television series, which later inspired the 2006 film adaptation starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
The screenplay for Miami Vice ’85 has been written by Dan Gilroy, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich. The film is produced by Dylan Clark alongside Kosinski, with Universal overseeing development.
Both lead actors join the project at peak career moments. Jordan recently secured major award wins for his performance in Sinners, while Butler earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Elvis and has continued to collaborate with prominent filmmakers across recent projects.
The reboot is expected to draw inspiration from the original series’ early seasons, which were known for their cultural impact on fashion, music and cinematic style.
Miami Vice ’85 marks a major revival of the franchise, combining star power and modern filmmaking with the legacy of a defining television classic.
