James Ortiz has been deemed eligible for consideration in the Best Supporting Actor category at the Academy Awards for his performance in Project Hail Mary, according to an exclusive report by Variety.
Ortiz, a stage performer and puppeteer, brings to life Rocky, a spider-like alien character central to the Amazon MGM Studios production.
The role combines intricate puppetry with vocal performance opposite Ryan Gosling and has emerged as one of the film’s most discussed elements ahead of the awards season.
Ortiz reportedly qualifies under current Academy rules for acting categories, while also being eligible for SAG-AFTRA honours.
However, his performance would not meet the existing eligibility criteria for the Golden Globes. The Critics Choice Awards and BAFTAs, which have previously recognised non-traditional performances, are expected to consider his work.
The development has renewed debate within the film industry about how to classify performances that blend physical manipulation, voice work and technical craft.
While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has historically recognised innovation through the Special Achievement Award, the category has not been used in recent years despite its role in honouring work that falls outside traditional classifications.
Ortiz explained his approach to the role, stating, “It’s a spectacle. For me as a performer, however, that’s never my entry point. I’m interested in the heart of the character — what they’re trying to communicate, what they’re feeling underneath all of it.”
The report highlights that Rocky’s character relies heavily on timing, movement and emotional expression delivered through puppetry, raising questions about whether such performances should compete directly with live-action roles or be recognised through a dedicated category.
