Reese Witherspoon on backlash over AI comments: 'I don’t believe computers should replace humanity'
Witherspoon said that engaging with AI is about empowerment and understanding

Reese Witherspoon is responding to backlash after encouraging women to learn more about artificial intelligence, clarifying her stance following criticism online.
According to People, the actress faced pushback after sharing an Instagram video urging women to engage with AI technology, with some critics raising concerns about its impact on jobs, creativity and the environment.
In response, Witherspoon addressed the criticism in a follow-up message, emphasising that her intention was not to promote AI at the expense of human work. “I don’t believe computers should replace humanity,” she said.
She also made clear that she was not being paid to promote AI tools, explaining that her goal was to better understand the technology and share that learning with others.
Witherspoon acknowledged concerns about artificial intelligence, including its environmental impact and the broader implications of artificial general intelligence (AGI). At the same time, she highlighted the importance of awareness and education, particularly for women.
The actress pointed to a gender gap in AI usage, noting that women are less likely to use the technology despite being more vulnerable to job disruption from automation. Her original message encouraged women to learn the basics so they are not left behind as AI continues to evolve.
While her comments sparked debate, Witherspoon maintained that engaging with AI is about empowerment and understanding, not replacing human creativity, as the conversation around the technology continues across industries.
