Lionsgate Play has officially renewed Heated Rivalry for a second season, as the Indian streaming platform outlines an ambitious expansion strategy focused on theatrical releases and increased Hollywood content.

The romantic ice hockey drama, based on novels by Rachel Reid, is set to return in 2027. Creator Jacob Tierney has teased that the upcoming season will explore darker and more serious themes, continuing the story of central characters Shane and Ilya.

The renewal comes as part of a broader announcement by Lionsgate Play, which revealed plans for over 100 premieres in 2026. The streamer also introduced a “theatrical-first” model, where select titles will debut in cinemas before becoming available on the platform, marking a significant shift in its distribution strategy.

According to Lionsgate Play Asia founder Rohit Jain, the move aims to combine the scale of theatrical releases with the accessibility of streaming. The strategy reflects growing demand for Hollywood content among Indian audiences and positions the platform to compete more aggressively in the evolving entertainment landscape.

Upcoming theatrical-first titles include films featuring major stars such as Russell Crowe, Gerard Butler, Robert Pattinson, and Mark Wahlberg. The platform is also expanding its focus on action and thriller content, alongside its existing catalog of popular franchises and series.

Following its recent acquisition by Jain, Lionsgate Play is entering a new phase of growth, supported by a multi-year licensing deal that ensures continued access to Lionsgate’s film and television library.

With Heated Rivalry season 2 confirmed and a major content push underway, Lionsgate Play is positioning itself as a key player in both streaming and theatrical entertainment markets.
