Traders clash with PERA Force
Tensions between traders and the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA) escalated in Mianwali as trader unions announced a complete shutter-down strike across the city from today (Monday), demanding resolution of their grievances.
The decision was taken at a joint meeting of trader representatives, who unanimously agreed to shut all major markets until their issues with the enforcement force are addressed.
Addressing a press conference, Kutchery Bazaar President Falak Sher Awan alleged that the para force had been harassing traders through intimidation, fines and sealing of shops.
He said a complete strike was observed in Muslim Bazaar a day earlier against these actions, after which a detained shopkeeper was released. However, he claimed that the situation worsened when Main Bazaar trader leader and Super Store Association President Jamal Khan was booked in a case, arrested and allegedly subjected to torture in custody.
Main Bazaar Traders President Mubeen Sherwani said the arrest had triggered widespread anger among traders and the general public. He added that despite a strike in the Main Bazaar on Sunday, the detained trader was shifted to jail, further aggravating tensions.
Leaders of various market associations, including Sarafa Bazaar, Muslim Bazaar, Balo Khel and Anjuman Qasaban, also expressed support for the strike.
