Andrea Barber says the 1990s were the 'last innocent decade' before things got 'really heavy'
Barber described the era as one filled with 'comfort and safety and love'

Andrea Barber is reflecting on her time in the spotlight, sharing a nostalgic take on the 1990s and how the entertainment landscape has changed since then.
The Full House star said, “I miss the ’90s. It was, like, the last innocent decade before the world got really heavy.”
Barber, best known for playing Kimmy Gibbler on the hit sitcom, made the comments while attending a ’90s-themed event tied to American Idol. She described the era as one filled with “comfort and safety and love,” highlighting the emotional connection many still feel toward that time.
She also reflected on how television has evolved, pointing to the dominance of network TV during that period. Calling it the “network TV heyday,” Barber noted that today’s streaming landscape feels more fragmented in comparison.
While acknowledging that modern TV offers more variety, she suggested something has been lost along the way, adding that audiences might benefit from lighter content. Barber said viewers don’t necessarily need “heavy” or overly dramatic programming, emphasising instead the value of humor and escapism.
Beyond her reflections on the industry, Barber also spoke about her enduring bond with her Full House castmates, describing them as “family.” She shared that they remain in touch through a group chat and recently celebrated Candace Cameron Bure’s milestone birthday together.
The actress, now approaching 50, added that she still feels like her younger self, joking that she often feels like the same teenager who once wore Kimmy Gibbler’s quirky outfits.
Her comments tap into a broader wave of nostalgia for the 1990s, a time many associate with simpler storytelling, shared cultural moments and the enduring appeal of classic sitcoms.
