'FernGully' live-action remake in development at Amazon MGM Studios

'FernGully' live-action remake confirmed with Marielle Heller directing Amazon MGM Studios’ reimagining of the classic

FernGully: The Last Rainforest is officially being developed as a live-action adaptation by Amazon MGM Studios, marking a new reimagining of the beloved animated classic.

The project will be directed and written by Marielle Heller, who is set to lead the studio’s modern adaptation of the fantasy environmental story.

The original 1992 animated film is widely remembered for its environmental themes and voice cast, including Robin Williams, Tim Curry, and Christian Slater. Set in an Australian rainforest, the story follows magical fairies who work to protect their home from deforestation and pollution, including a destructive force known as Hexxus.

The live-action version aims to reintroduce the story to modern audiences while maintaining its environmental message. Production will be handled by Stacey Sher through Shiny Penny, alongside Susan Ursitti-Sheinberg, Jon Sheinberg, and Matt Feige of Sheinberg Feige Organization. Heller will also produce under her Defiant by Nature banner with Leah Holzer.

Marielle Heller, known for directing films such as Nightbitch and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, continues to expand her collaboration with major studios. The FernGully project adds to her growing slate of high-profile adaptations and original works.

The deal for the remake was reportedly negotiated through Verve Talent and Fischbach, Perlstein, Lieberman & Almond. The original animated film continues to be distributed by Shout! Factory and remains a cult favorite for its environmental themes and musical contributions.

Further casting and release details for the live-action adaptation have not yet been announced, as the project remains in early development.
