Olivia Rodrigo has released her new single “drop dead”, accompanied by a music video filmed at Palace of Versailles, marking the first release from her upcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

The track is described by Rodrigo as being inspired by “premonitions in her relationship”, which she referred to as “feminine intuition” in an interview with British Vogue.

She said, “I’m very stubborn and if I like someone, I’m like, 'Yo, this is going to happen. This is rare! Let’s do it.’” She also described the person the song is about as “great”.

The song centres on early romantic certainty and includes references to The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven”, as well as imagery connected to Versailles, which is reflected in the video’s setting.

Directed by Petra Collins, the video shows Rodrigo moving through the palace’s rooms before performing with a guitar, using the historic setting as a backdrop for a personal narrative.

The single was co-written by Rodrigo alongside Dan Nigro and Amy Allen, with Nigro also producing the track. The album is expected to reflect a shift in sound, influenced by Rodrigo’s time spent in London.

Fans have discussed possible references within the song and video, including connections to Louis Partridge, whom Rodrigo previously dated.

Observations have focused on details such as the palace’s historical association with French monarchs named Louis and lyrical references to astrological signs.

The promotional campaign included installations in cities such as Los Angeles, New York City, Paris and London, spelling out the release date.

You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love is set for release on June 12.
