A third installment in the blockbuster Top Gun franchise is officially moving forward, with Tom Cruise expected to return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

According to Variety, Top Gun 3 is in development at Paramount, continuing the momentum of the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, which became the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career.

The project has been in the works since at least 2024, with screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick, returning to pen the script.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the sequel is expected to build on the storylines introduced in Maverick, which followed Cruise’s character mentoring a new generation of pilots while confronting his past.

Key cast members, including Miles Teller and Glen Powell, have previously been linked to returning, though official casting confirmations have yet to be announced.

The development of Top Gun 3 comes as Hollywood continues to invest in proven franchises, especially following the global success of Maverick, which revitalized the decades-old series and earned both critical acclaim and box office dominance.

With Cruise once again at the center, the next chapter of Top Gun is already generating significant anticipation, as fans await another high-octane return to the skies.
