Anne Hathaway is opening up about how Beyoncé influenced her performance in the upcoming film Mother Mary, revealing that she closely studied the global superstar’s presence and technique while preparing for the role.
Hathaway said she looked to Beyoncé's “swag” as a key reference point in developing her portrayal of a larger-than-life pop icon. The actor, who plays the titular character in the film, explained that capturing the physicality and confidence of a performer at that level required a different approach than her previous work.
Hathaway also discussed the challenge of stepping into the role of a pop star, noting that the performance demanded both vocal and physical transformation. While she has a background in musical theater, she emphasised that embodying a contemporary music icon required her to rethink how she uses her voice and presence on screen.
To prepare, Hathaway spent significant time refining her performance style, focusing on movement, control and emotional delivery, elements she observed in Beyoncé’s performances. The influence helped her better understand how to balance technical precision with stage charisma.
Mother Mary, directed by David Lowery, follows a complex relationship between a pop star and a fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel.
The film is set for a limited theatrical release on April 17 before expanding wider on April 24, positioning it as one of the most anticipated releases of the spring.
Hathaway’s comments highlight the level of preparation behind the role, as she takes on a character inspired by the intensity and artistry of real-world pop stardom, with Beyoncé serving as a central influence in shaping the performance.
