'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender' animators respond after online film leak
Animators of 'The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender' respond after full film leaked online ahead of release
An animator who worked on The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender has spoken out after the full animated film leaked online months ahead of its planned release.
The movie was originally scheduled for a theatrical rollout on October 9 2026, before Paramount shifted it to a direct-to-streaming release on Paramount+.
Following that decision, fan backlash grew, with more than 40,000 signatures gathered on a petition calling for the film to return to cinemas.
The situation escalated further in April 2026 when the complete film began circulating online after being shared across social media platforms.
The initial leak was attributed to a user on X who claimed the film had been “accidentally emailed” to them. The post remained online for several hours before being removed for copyright infringement, but not before widespread sharing occurred.
Julia Schoel, a Senior 2D Animator who worked on The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, addressed the leak on social media. Schoel has previously contributed to projects including Lackadaisy and Helluva Boss.
“We worked on the Aang movie for years with the expectation that we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theatres… just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on Twitter like candy,” she wrote.
She also addressed claims that the change in release strategy justified piracy, adding, “I don’t like seeing people use Paramount’s awful decision to remove the movie from theatres to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support Paramount+, but pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”
Background artist Anna Gong also commented on the situation, stating, “It feels pretty awful,” and encouraged viewers to support the official release so more films can be made.
Paramount has not yet publicly responded to the leak, and the film remains scheduled for release on Paramount+ in October 2026.
