Justin Bieber’s headlining performance at Coachella 2026 has sparked mixed reactions online, with some viewers describing the set as unusually stripped back, while sources close to the singer say he is unfazed by the debate.

The 32 year old performer took to the stage on April 11, 2026 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, delivering a minimalist show that focused heavily on material from his recent albums SWAG and SWAG II, alongside select tracks from earlier in his career.

Unlike traditional festival headliners, Bieber’s performance featured no full band or dancers for most of the set. Instead, he appeared in a hoodie, shorts and boots, performing solo in a pared down staging approach that placed emphasis on vocals and atmosphere rather than choreography or production spectacle.

According to a source close to the artist, Bieber was satisfied with how the performance unfolded and had deliberately chosen a concept that reflected his current artistic direction.

“He felt great about the set,” the source said. “He was excited to reconnect with fans in a way that felt true to where he is now. He is not focused on how it is being labelled. He wanted to do it his way.”

The set also included a notable mid performance shift in tone, with Bieber sitting at a computer and revisiting moments from his earlier career. Screens displayed music videos and clips from past hits such as ‘Baby’ and ‘Beauty and a Beat’, while he sang along, creating a reflective segment that contrasted with the more contemporary material in the first half of the show.

Guest appearances added variety to the night, with The Kid LAROI joining for their collaboration ‘Stay’, followed later by additional surprise guests including Tems, WizKid, Dijon and Mk.gee during the closing section of the performance.

Despite online commentary ranging from praise for the artistic restraint to criticism describing the set as low energy, insiders say Bieber remains focused on his own interpretation of the show rather than public reaction.

The performance also came during a busy weekend for Bieber and his wife Hailey Bieber, who attended Coachella related events while balancing work commitments in the Palm Springs area.

Bieber had also performed a surprise invite only show in Los Angeles days earlier at The Roxy Theatre, previewing material from his recent albums SWAG and SWAG II, which were released in 2025.

While audience reactions continue to circulate online, sources emphasise that the Coachella set was designed as a personal artistic statement rather than a traditional festival spectacle.
