‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ tops 2026 box office with $629m worldwide

Super Mario Galaxy Movie has emerged as the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2026 so far, earning $629m at the global box office.

The family film continues to perform strongly in international markets, collecting $83.5m in its second weekend across 81 territories. Its total includes $320m overseas and $308m in North America, with key markets such as Mexico, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Germany and France contributing significantly to its success. According to Variety, the film is expected to continue its upward trajectory, potentially approaching the $1bn mark in the coming weeks.

Despite its current lead, the film faces upcoming competition from major releases including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5 and Avengers: Doomsday, which could challenge its position later in the year.

Meanwhile, Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, has crossed the $500m milestone globally. The space drama has earned $510m to date, with $254m from international markets and $256.5m domestically after four weeks of release. The film remains a strong performer, adding $30.6m overseas over the latest weekend.

Elsewhere, A24’s The Drama, starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, continues to gain traction. The film has generated $65m globally after two weekends, including $35m from international markets. Produced on a budget of under $28m, the film’s controversial premise and online discussion have contributed to its steady performance.

The global box office race in 2026 remains competitive as major studio releases continue to drive theatrical momentum.
