Christopher Nolan has shared a personal statement following the death of British actor John Nolan, whose career included roles in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises and the television series Person of Interest. The actor died on April 11, 2026, at the age of 87.

John Nolan, the uncle of Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, was widely recognised for portraying Douglas Fredericks, a Wayne Enterprises board member, in Batman Begins and its sequel, The Dark Knight Rises.

He also appeared in other projects connected to his family, including Following and Dunkirk.

In a statement released after the news was reported, Christopher Nolan reflected on his uncle’s influence and legacy. “My uncle John was the first artist I knew, and he taught me more than anyone about the search for truth in acting and the joys of creative achievement. I miss him terribly, but take great comfort in my memories of John, particularly those of working together.”

Born on May 22, 1938, John Nolan built a long career across stage and screen. He gained early recognition for playing the lead role in the BBC miniseries Daniel Deronda, adapted from George Eliot’s novel. He had previously performed the same role in a Royal Shakespeare Company stage production.

His theatre work included time with both the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, contributing to a reputation as a respected stage performer.

John Nolan’s career spanned several decades, beginning with screen credits dating back to 1967. On television, he appeared in series such as Doomwatch and Shabby Tiger, in addition to Person of Interest, which was created by Jonathan Nolan.
