Traditional rural fairs keep culture alive in South Punjab

Seasonal festivities blend sports, food, community spirit across region

MULTAN:

Traditional countryside fairs across South Punjab continue to showcase a vibrant blend of culture, recreation, and community spirit, drawing people of all ages with their festive charm and lively atmosphere.

During the ongoing season, these rural fairs, deeply rooted in local traditions, offer a mix of entertainment and cultural expression. Popular attractions include kabaddi matches and other indigenous sports that draw large crowds, while colorful stalls selling sweets and traditional foods add to the festive appeal.

Children and families also enjoy toys, swings, and other recreational activities, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration.

Prominent fairs are being held in areas such as Jalalpur Pirwala, Shujaabad, Suraj Miani, Uch Sharif, Dunyapur, Sher Shah, and Chowk Qureshi, among others. Similar events are taking place at Manglot Sharif in Lodhran, Pir Mubarak Shah in Band-Bosan, and the Sarwar Shaheed area of Multan district, each reflecting strong community participation and local traditions.

Larger shrine-based festivals feature spiritual gatherings marked by tranquility and traditional contests, while hundreds of smaller village-level fairs are also being held across the region.

These smaller events are often simpler, focusing on social interaction and spiritual connection, alongside limited recreational activities.

Residents say these fairs are more than just entertainment.

"These cultural gatherings are a symbol of peace, pleasure, and spiritual harmony, bringing people together beyond social divides," said Rana Arif Muhammad Riaz.

Dilawar Hussain, a resident of Nawabpur, said such events promote tranquility, strengthen community bonds, and help preserve the rich cultural heritage of South Punjab.

With nearly every union council hosting such events during the season, these fairs remain a living expression of the region's identity—highlighting its traditions, colors, and enduring message of harmony and collective joy.
