'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' holds number one box office despite second weekend drop

'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' remains top of box office with $69m second weekend despite larger drop than predecessor

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has retained the number one position at the box office in its second weekend, despite experiencing a larger percentage drop compared to its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Universal and Illumination release is projected to earn $69 million over the weekend, marking a 47% decline from its $131 million opening.

In comparison, The Super Mario Bros. Movie recorded a 37% drop in its second weekend, earning $92 million in 2023.

Despite the sharper decline, the sequel continues to perform strongly overall. It is expected to surpass $300 million in domestic earnings during the weekend and is projected to exceed $400 million by the end of its theatrical run. This would place it near the $423.9 million domestic total achieved by A Minecraft Movie.

Among new releases, Universal’s You, Me & Tuscany opened with an estimated $8.3 million from 3,151 locations, placing it fourth at the box office. Audience reception has been positive, with a CinemaScore of A- and a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics returned a 69% score.

Project Hail Mary continued its steady performance, earning $25 million in its fourth weekend, a 21% drop, and surpassing $250 million domestically. The Drama also maintained momentum, generating $9.1 million in its second weekend for a 10-day total of $31 million.

Meanwhile, Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers is set to reach $157 million domestically, surpassing Elemental to become the highest-grossing original animated film in North America since the pandemic.
