Honkai Star Rail releases anniversary short film made by MAPPA, 'Jujutsu Kaisen' studio

Honkai Star Rail marks third anniversary with MAPPA short film and cryptic teaser about future content

Honkai Star Rail has marked its third anniversary with the release of a new short film created in collaboration with anime studio MAPPA.

The project, titled “Death in the Afternoon”, was published by developer HoYoverse as a concept animation to celebrate the milestone.

The 2-minute, 52-second film focuses on the Stellaron Hunters, a central faction within the game’s narrative known for their complex roles in the story.

The animation features stylised visuals, including purple energy effects and collapsing environments, alongside a prominent soundtrack. The official release included a note advising viewers to listen with headphones.

MAPPA, the studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, handled production on the short.

HoYoverse described the project using an iceberg analogy in its official communication, stating, “The majesty of icebergs floating on the sea comes from the fact that only one-eighth of them appears above the water’s surface.”

The developer has clarified that “Death in the Afternoon” is a concept trailer rather than a confirmed series or extended production. No details regarding additional episodes or a release schedule have been announced.

Despite this, discussion within the community has linked the project to earlier rumours of a potential Honkai Star Rail film, which have circulated since mid-2025. HoYoverse has not confirmed any connection between the short and those reports.
