Ralph Fiennes won't return as Voldemort, backs Tilda Swinton for 'Harry Potter' TV series
The Oscar nominee has said that the "ship has sailed" for his return as Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise

Ralph Fiennes has revealed that he will not reprise his iconic role as Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, saying the “ship has sailed” on his return while suggesting an unexpected casting choice, Tilda Swinton.
Speaking about the highly anticipated reboot, Fiennes confirmed that although he had previously been open to returning, he no longer sees it happening. Instead, he said Swinton “would be amazing” as the dark wizard, a role that remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the series.
The HBO adaptation, based on JK Rowling’s beloved books, aims to retell the original story in a more detailed, long-form format. While several major characters have reportedly been cast, the role of Voldemort has yet to be officially announced, fueling ongoing speculation among fans.
Fiennes’ endorsement of Swinton adds a fresh twist to the conversation, given her reputation for transformative performances and unconventional roles. His suggestion also reflects the broader reimagining of characters expected in the reboot, as the series looks to establish its own identity separate from the original films.
At the same time, Fiennes made it clear that he is stepping away from the role that became a defining part of his career. His portrayal of Voldemort across the original Harry Potter film series remains one of the most recognisable elements of the franchise, but the new series is expected to feature an entirely new cast.
With production underway and key roles still under wraps, the HBO Harry Potter series continues to build anticipation, with the eventual casting of Voldemort likely to become one of the most closely watched announcements in television.
