ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has sought a detailed report from Muhammad Medical College in Mirpurkhas regarding the death of Fahmida Laghari, a third-year female student, amid allegations of harassment at the institution.

In a letter to the college principal, the council on Friday expressed deep condolences over the student's death and described the incident as having a "profound and far-reaching impact" on the student community.

The PMDC directed the administration to submit a "factual, complete and comprehensive account" of the incident within seven days.

According to the letter, the council asked the college to provide details of the circumstances surrounding the death, including the date, time and events as recorded by the institution.

It also sought information on any inquiry or fact-finding committee formed by the college or notified by the government, including its composition, terms of reference, and any preliminary findings.

The regulatory body further inquired whether the student had lodged any formal or informal complaints before the incident and what actions, if any, the administration took.

The college was also asked to outline measures in place to prevent harassment, including complaint redressal mechanisms, and steps taken or planned to provide mental health support to students.

In addition, the PMDC requested details of any administrative or precautionary measures the institution adopted following the incident.

Emphasizing student welfare, the council stressed the need to ensure a safe, respectful and supportive academic environment.

"Your timely and detailed response is essential for the council to evaluate the situation and take any necessary steps in accordance with its mandate," the letter stated.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the registrar of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, the PMDC legal department and senior officials of the Ministry of National Health Services.

The college must submit its report by April 17, after which the council is expected to decide further action.
