Concern raised over 'forced conversions' of minor girls

Religious leaders, citizens call for action against forced marriage and abuse

FAISALABAD:

A protest walk titled "Justice for Minority Girls" was organiaed by the Catholic Diocese of Faisalabad under the guidance of Bishop Andreas Rehmat, to raise voice against alleged forced marriages, kidnapping, alleged forced conversions, and abuse of minor girls.

The central message of the walk, "A minor girl is not a wife; religion cannot be forcibly converted", highlighted the need to protect the dignity, freedom, and fundamental rights of minority children.

A large number of priests, teachers, teenage students, youth leaders, women representatives, social workers, and citizens from different walks of life participated in the walk.

Participants carried banners and placards calling for the protection of minor girls and the effective implementation of child protection laws.

Addressing the participants, Bishop Andreas Rehmat said that minor girls are among the most vulnerable segments of society and their protection must be ensured at all costs.

He stated that forced marriage and forced religious conversion of minors constitute serious violations of human dignity, fundamental rights, and the rule of law.

He further said that any consent obtained under pressure, fear, or intimidation cannot be considered legally or morally valid, adding that it is the responsibility of the state to prevent such incidents.

The bishop urged the government, judiciary, and law enforcement agencies to take immediate and effective action, ensure the recovery of affected girls, and bring perpetrators to justice.

He also appealed to parents, teachers, religious leaders, and civil society to work collectively to raise awareness and safeguard the future of minority children.

Speakers on the occasion stressed that minor girls must be protected from forced marriages and alleged coercive conversions, and that consent obtained under fear or pressure should not be accepted.

They called for strict enforcement of child protection laws, transparent investigations, and immediate support for affected families.

Participants emphasised that every child has the right to education, protection, and religious freedom.
