Netflix scraps ‘Perfect’ Olympic drama after Millie Bobby Brown exit
Netflix has reportedly scrapped its upcoming Olympic sports drama Perfect following the exit of lead star Millie Bobby Brown, according to industry reports.
The film was set to centre on Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug, one of the most iconic figures in US sporting history, with Brown attached to portray the athlete. The project had been preparing to enter production this summer before being halted.
Sources indicate that Brown’s departure stemmed from creative differences with the production team. Netflix and representatives for Brown have not issued official comments on the decision.
Perfect had undergone several behind-the-scenes changes prior to its cancellation. Gia Coppola was originally attached to direct the film, with Ronnie Sandahl writing the script. Coppola later exited the project and was replaced by Cate Shortland. Despite the creative reshuffling, the film ultimately did not move forward after Brown’s exit.
The planned story would have followed Strug’s defining moment at the 1996 Olympic Games, when she famously completed a vault on an injured ankle to secure gold for the US women’s gymnastics team known as the Magnificent Seven. The image of Strug being carried off the mat by coach Béla Károlyi remains one of the most recognisable moments in Olympic history.
Although Perfect has been shelved, Netflix is continuing its collaboration with Brown on several other projects. These include Enola Holmes 3, which is expected to release later this year, as well as upcoming films Just Picture It and Nineteen Steps, the latter adapted from Brown’s own novel.
Brown also recently wrapped the final season of Stranger Things, which concluded its run in December.
