Steven Spielberg has reflected on his early involvement with Interstellar, revealing that he spent around a year developing the project before ultimately stepping away and allowing Christopher Nolan to take over what would become one of the most talked about science fiction films of the decade.

Speaking to Empire magazine, Spielberg explained that he was first brought onto the project by producer Lynda Obst and physicist Kip Thorne, whose scientific expertise helped shape the story’s foundation. During his time attached to the film, Spielberg said he immersed himself in real world science research, spending time at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and speaking directly with scientists and aerospace engineers.

He also confirmed that Jonathan Nolan was brought in to write early drafts of the screenplay. According to Spielberg, there was immediate creative energy behind the idea, but the material did not fully lock into place during his development phase. He eventually stepped away from the project, a decision that opened the door for Christopher Nolan to take over directing duties.

Spielberg recalled that Jonathan Nolan had even anticipated the transition, suggesting that if Spielberg exited the film, his brother would likely be the one to continue it. Christopher Nolan ultimately joined the project shortly afterwards, reshaping it into the final version that was released in 2014.

Interstellar went on to become a major global release, grossing approximately $681 million worldwide and receiving five Academy Award nominations. It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and starred Matthew McConaughey as a former NASA pilot tasked with finding a new home for humanity as Earth faces environmental collapse. Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine also featured in key roles.

Spielberg has since described the final film as better suited to Nolan’s creative style. He noted that while he was deeply interested in the scientific and exploratory aspects of the story, the emotional and structural approach taken by Nolan ultimately aligned more closely with the finished film’s identity.

Christopher Nolan has also spoken publicly about the project’s origins, acknowledging Spielberg’s early involvement and the gradual evolution of the script through multiple iterations. He has described how elements of Jonathan Nolan’s early writing combined with his own thematic interests, particularly around time, memory and human connection.

Although Spielberg moved on to other projects, he has maintained that his time on Interstellar was creatively significant, even if it did not result in a finished film under his direction.
