Off-screen drama clouds 'Euphoria' return

Awkward red-carpet moments involving Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Sam Levinson reignite rumours of rifts

Fresh speculation over tensions within the cast and creative leadership of 'Euphoria' has intensified after a series of conspicuously awkward moments at the show's Season 3 premiere in Los Angeles, where its biggest names appeared to keep their distance both on and off the red carpet.

At the centre of the chatter was Zendaya, whose brief and visibly strained interaction with series creator Sam Levinson reignited long-running rumours of a creative rift.

Cameras captured the actress offering only a fleeting greeting before moving on, denying photographers the expected joint appearance and prompting online scrutiny of Levinson's seemingly frustrated reaction.

The moment has been widely interpreted as a continuation of tensions believed to have emerged during the show's prolonged hiatus, when Levinson shifted his focus to 'The Idol'.

Reports at the time suggested frustration on Zendaya's part over delays to the third season, though Levinson's camp attributed scheduling challenges in part to her expanding film commitments, including roles in 'Challengers' and 'Dune: Part Two'.

Zendaya, however, publicly rejected claims that her workload had stalled production, stating in a 2024 interview that she remained "open, just waiting" for filming to resume.

Compounding the intrigue, the premiere also saw apparent distance between Zendaya and co-star Sydney Sweeney, fuelling persistent rumours of discord between the two leading actors.

Despite both being central figures in the series, the pair reportedly avoided each other throughout the evening at the TCL Chinese Theatre, with Sweeney mingling with castmates such as Hunter Schafer and Alexa Demie, while Zendaya arrived late and skipped the official after-party.

Industry insiders have pointed to a mix of personal and ideological factors behind the alleged strain. Unverified claims circulating in entertainment circles suggest tensions may have been exacerbated by social dynamics involving Tom Holland, Zendaya's partner, as well as perceived political differences between the two actresses.

Others note that speculation intensified following public attention around Sweeney's family event in 2022 and subsequent political associations, although none of these claims have been confirmed by the actors themselves.

Producers, according to reports, are acutely aware of the narrative surrounding the cast and have discouraged media from raising questions about any alleged feud during the current press tour.

The shift marks a notable contrast from earlier seasons, when Zendaya and Sweeney frequently appeared together in promotional settings, with Sweeney previously praising her co-star's leadership on set.

Even so, some sources close to the production have dismissed the feud narrative as overstated, arguing that scheduling conflicts - particularly Zendaya's commitments to upcoming projects such as 'The Odyssey' and 'Dune: Part Three' - offer a more mundane explanation for the lack of interaction.

Sweeney, meanwhile, continues to ride a wave of commercial success following her recent work, including 'The Housemaid'. With neither camp offering public clarification, the episode has left fans and industry observers parsing body language and timing for clues.

Whether the perceived chill reflects genuine discord or mere coincidence, the optics have ensured that attention around 'Euphoria' extends well beyond its on-screen drama as it heads into its long-awaited third season, set to premiere on April 12.
