Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Tom Waits join Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn, boosting buzz for Netflix’s sci-fi film

Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Tom Waits have officially joined the voice cast of Ray Gunn, the highly anticipated animated feature from filmmaker Brad Bird.
The trio will star alongside veteran voice actor John Ratzenberger in the Skydance Animation production, which is set for release on Netflix later this year.
According to the film’s logline, Ray Gunn is set in Metropia, a sprawling futuristic city imagined through a 1939 lens. The story follows private investigator Raymond Gunn as he becomes entangled in a complex case involving aliens, murder and a mysterious multimedia star named Venus Nova. The film blends sci-fi, noir and retro aesthetics, marking a unique addition to the streaming platform’s animation slate.
Brad Bird, best known for directing The Incredibles and its sequel, returns as both writer and director for Ray Gunn. The project marks his first directorial effort since 2018 and comes ahead of his planned return to the superhero franchise with Incredibles 3, currently slated for release in 2028.
The film is produced by Skydance Animation leaders John Lasseter, David Ellison and Dana Goldberg as part of the studio’s multi-year agreement with Netflix to release animated features exclusively on the platform.
With a star-studded voice cast and an ambitious storyline, Ray Gunn is expected to be a major addition to Netflix’s growing animation portfolio, which continues to gain momentum following recent award-winning successes.
