Samson, the debut title from developer Liquid Swords, launches on April 8 for PC, marking a critical moment for the studio founded by Just Cause co-creator Christofer Sundberg.

The release follows a turbulent development period that included layoffs, budget reductions, and a shift in the game’s overall scope.

Speaking ahead of launch, Sundberg described the release as decisive for the company’s future. “It is really make-or-break for us with the release of Samson,” he said.

The studio reduced its workforce by half in 2025, a move he said was necessary to avoid closure. “We choose to survive, even though it hurts to lay off great developers,” Sundberg added.

Originally envisioned as a large-scale AAA project, Samson has been reworked into a smaller AA experience. The game centres on a character navigating a crime-driven narrative, with gameplay structured around debt repayment mechanics and mission deadlines.

Sundberg acknowledged the changes, stating the team “refocused the game based on what we had and what was realistic”.

The title has drawn comparisons to Grand Theft Auto due to its urban setting and crime themes, though Sundberg rejected direct parallels.

“GTA is a phenomenon and one of the most important pillars in the world of entertainment, and we are very different from that and we've never pretended we were something we're not,” he said.

Samson is priced at $25, reflecting its reduced scale and approximately 25 hours of gameplay. Sundberg said the decision aimed to align value with content, noting the game would continue to evolve post-launch.

The release comes amid wider industry challenges, including layoffs and shifting development models. Sundberg criticised current trends, stating, “It requires looking at your business from a brutally honest perspective and working with what you have.”

Despite uncertainty, Sundberg emphasised the personal stakes involved. “If we screw this launch up it's on me,” he said, adding that the team’s efforts underpin any success.
